A fast-moving fire on the Warm Springs reservation grew to nearly 8,000 acres Saturday, with fire managers expecting to have the blaze in check at 10,000 to 12,000 acres by this morning.

The fire was discovered around 9:30 a.m., and is believed to be human-caused, said assistant fire management officer of logistics William Wilson with the Warm Springs Fire & Safety Department. The fire threatened structures north of Warm Springs along Highway 3 and in the Wolfe Point subdivision, and by 1 p.m. had grown to 1,200 acres, Wilson said.

Three retardant-dropping planes and a water-dropping helicopter joined the fight around 3 p.m. Wilson said burnout operations planned for overnight will increase the acres burned, but should allow crews to get a handle on the fire by today.
