Two people were killed and one injured Friday evening in a traffic crash north of Madras, according to Oregon State Police.
The two-vehicle crash occurred a few miles outside Madras on U.S. Highway 97 at around 5:30 p.m. The preliminary investigation suggests a line of vehicles were attempting to pass a commercial truck. One of the vehicles was unable to complete the pass and collided head-on with a vehicle traveling in the opposite direction.
Both male drivers were pronounced dead at the scene, while an elderly female passenger was transported to St. Charles Madras for treatment. One of the vehicles involved in the crash caught fire, which was extinguished by firefighters from Jefferson County Fire District No. 1.
As of 7:30 p.m., both lanes of the highway were blocked, and a lengthy investigation was anticipated.
