A 490-acre prescribed burn is planned Tuesday through Thursday in the Deschutes National Forest, according to Jean Nelson-Dean with the Central Oregon Fire Management Service.
The burn will be located in the Pringle Falls Experimental Forest approximately 13 miles southwest of Sunriver and nine miles northwest of La Pine.
The burn will begin at 10 a.m. today and is expected to end at 6 p.m. Thursday.
Sunriver and La Pine residents may see visible smoke plumes and, depending on wind condition and direction, may encounter smoke on nearby forest roads. Wild River, Fall River Estates and Ponderosa Estates subdivisions are likely to experience some smoke impacts due to their proximity to the burn, Nelson-Dean said.
The burn is part of a research project to explore options for fuels management and forest insect and tree disease issues. The specific goal of the burn is to reduce brush cover and fuel load to decrease the crown fire hazard in the area.
