A man accused of fatally shooting an acquaintance in early February declined to enter a plea to a charge of murder on Wednesday.
Luke Wirkkala, 32, is accused of killing David Allen Ryder, 31, in the early morning hours of Feb. 4 at Wirkkala’s home in southeast Bend. Wirkkala was arrested that same day, and has been held at the Deschutes County jail since.
Wednesday, Wirkkala appeared by video in Deschutes County Circuit Court. Public defender Joel Wirtz told Judge Wells Ashby his client would not be entering a plea as scheduled, as he will soon be retaining defense attorney Walter Todd, of Salem. Wirkkala is now scheduled to enter a plea on June 6.
