Gov. John Kitzhaber has ordered all flags at public institutions to be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Friday in honor of Spc. Brandon Prescott, a soldier from Bend who died Saturday in Afghanistan.
“Spc. Prescott enlisted from Oregon and was proudly serving this state and nation,” said Kitzhaber in a prepared statement Wednesday. “My thoughts are with his family and his unit during this difficult time. Spc. Prescott’s death is tragic and he will be missed by many, but we will not forget his legacy of service and sacrifice.”
Prescott, 24, died in Kandahar Province, Afghanistan, of injuries sustained when his vehicle was attacked by an enemy improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 36th Infantry, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, Fort Bliss, Texas.
