Bend Police announced the arrest Wednesday of a man accused of stabbing two people on New Year’s Day.
Police caught up with Gerrit Evan Van Houweling, 23, of Bend, after “exhaustive efforts” to locate him, according to a police statement Friday. Houweling was held at Deschutes County jail on assault and burglary charges, according to police.
According to police, Van Houweling confronted Triet Tran, 37, of the 21000 block of Highway 20 at 4:29 a.m. Jan 1 and stabbed him. Police said Van Houweling also stabbed Kathy Thibeault, 38, same address, in the arms. Tran and Thibeault had argued earlier in the evening and separated; Thibeault subsequently met Van Houweling, who was unknown to either Tran or Thibeault, who gave Thibeault a ride home, according to police.
The incident occurred at the address on Highway 20, after which Van Houweling fled, according to police. Police searched his home on the 61000 block of Teal Road but failed to find him there.
Both Thibeault and Tran were treated for injuries that night at St. Charles Medical Center, Bend, and released.
