It was a rather lopsided contest overall, but you would not have known it by the final match of the night.
Mountain View’s Nathen Martin scored a takedown in the final five seconds of the third period to win 16-15 in a seesaw match with Bend High’s Tanner Hanson at 160 pounds. Martin’s win put a lid on the Cougars’ 59-15 dual-meet wrestling victory over the Lava Bears in a clash of Intermountain Conference rivals Thursday night at Mountain View High School.
“A barnburner,” said Cougars coach Les Combs of the Martin-Hanson match. “It was just back and forth the whole way.”
The 145-pound division produced another tight match, as Mountain View’s Kyler Ayers claimed a hard-fought 2-1 decision over Bend freshman Justin Vinton.
The Cougars scored wins by fall in seven weight classes: Halen Jolley at 106 pounds, J.T. Ayers (120), Kaleb Winebarger (126), Anthony Rushton (170), Austin Short (195), Trevor Roberts (220) and Chad Bach (285). Also for Mountain View, Tracy Pitcher won by technical fall at 138 pounds, and Zach Howe won by forfeit at 113.
For the Lava Bears, winners included Jeffery Durante by fall at 152 pounds, Nico Spring by decision at 132, and Jordan Gentner by forfeit at 182.
