Details: More than six years after a group of parents purchased land for a new campus for Cascades Academy of Central Oregon, project completion is in sight.
“Right now, all the walls are up and the roof structure is on,” said Eric Meeuwsen, project manager for CS Construction. “We're about 30 percent done to date.”
Blair Jenkins, Cascades Academy head of school, said she expects the new buildings, located on Tumalo Reservoir Road, to be ready for the 2013-14 school year.
Jenkins said the 38,000-square-foot campus, which is more than double the size of the current facility, will allow the K-12 school to expand its offerings. In addition to five more classrooms, she said the campus will have a gymnasium, library, two science labs, room for a new pre-kindergarten program and space for an improved technology center and expanded art program.
“We currently have 153 students, and the building will allow us to go up to 225,” she said.
Blair said the group of parents bought the land to give the school time to raise funds for the new campus. But when the economy declined, the school felt it wasn't the right time to raise the $10.2 million for the project.
In order to grow, however, Blair said the school needed a bigger facility. So in the fall of 2010, the school started a campaign, and officials broke ground in June.
She said the campaign continues, and $6.2 million has been raised so far. The remainder will be financed.
“It's been good teamwork on everybody's part to get us to this point,” she said. “Teachers are excited, students are excited, families are excited.”
