Paddling

Outrigger team to compete in Hawaii — Three members of the Bend Oregon Outrigger club will compete in the Queen Lili'oukalani outrigger canoe race later this month off the island of Hawaii. The 18-mile race, set for Aug. 31, will start in Kailua Bay and finish in Honaunau. Inez Martin and Amy Graves, both of Bend, and Kari Lynne, of Redmond, will compete in the women's 40-and-over category, along with three other crew members from Portland.

Soccer

Meeting tonight for youth soccer refs — Referees are being sought for the Bend Park & Recreation District's 2013 fall youth soccer season. A mandatory meeting for prospective referees is scheduled for 7 tonight at the park district office at 799 S.W. Columbia St. Officiating experience is not required, but candidates must be at least 15 years old and have sound soccer knowledge and a clean criminal history. Pay ranges from $10 to $14 per game, and games will be played on Saturdays from Sept. 7 through Oct. 26. For more information, call Rich Ekman at 541-706-6126.
