One person was killed and another was injured while working on a fire near the Mount Washington Wilderness today, according to Jean Nelson-Dean, spokeswoman for Deschutes National Forest.
John Hammack, 60 and of Madras, died at the scene, Nelson-Dean wrote in a press release, and Norman Crawford, 45, of Sisters, was injured in the accident. He was treated and released from St. Charles Bend.
The workers were part of a falling crew -- firefighters who cut down trees and hazardous fuels -- working for R&K Water Services out of Bonney Lake, Wash.
R&K declined to comment on the incident.
According to a report sent out by Nelson-Dean, the falling crew was working near Dugout Lake and were injured by a falling snag, or unexpected hidden obstacle. The incident was reported at 9:13 a.m.
Deschutes County Search and Rescue rappel crews and a helicopter responded to the incident.
Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office has taken control of the case.
Nelson-Dean was not available for additional comment.
