Oregon’s newest state park — Cottonwood Canyon on the John Day River — opened today.

Opening weekend festivities will take place Saturday and Sunday:

• 9 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday and Sunday: 2-mile guided hike. Meet at the trailhead parking lot near the campground; hike will cover the cultural and natural history of the area plus the past, present and future of the park.

• 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday: Fishing clinic (for youth under age 12) and “Let’s Go Birding” activity.

• 1 p.m. Saturday: “Wind and Water — The Legacy of the American-style Windmill” presentation.

The 8,000-plus-acre Cottonwood Canyon State Park is located on state Highway 206 between Condon and Wasco.
