One lane of U.S. Highway 97 through the Warm Springs Indian Reservation was still closed as of Wednesday night, a day after the crash of a fuel truck.
Shortly after 9 p.m. Tuesday, a truck driven by Kyle Tabor of Bend struck a bull elk on the north end of the reservation. Tabor’s truck rolled on to its side and slid approximately 400 yards into a stand of trees on the edge of the highway. Several thousand gallons of fuel were spilled, triggering the complete closure of the highway for multiple hours. A hazardous materials team working with the Oregon Department of Transportation and Warm Springs Fire Department is coordinating cleanup efforts.
