The 2013 Bend Roots Revival kicked off Friday night at its new home, Pakit Liquidators, the large home-improvement supply resale yard on Bend's east side.
With more than 80 bands -- mostly local -- playing on six stages over three days, the free festival returns this year after a last-minute cancellation in 2012 at its previous venue, the Century Center. The Revival started in 2006 at west-side restaurants Parrilla Grill and The Victorian Cafe before moving to Century Center in 2010.
Organizers and other volunteers have spent the past several weeks cleaning up the famously cluttered Pakit grounds to get the place ready to host Bend Roots. Pakit received its temporary permit of occupancy Friday morning, just in time for organizers to put some finishing touches on the space before bands started playing at 5:30 p.m.
”People keep asking me, 'Why'd you spend all summer cleaning that place out?” festival founder Mark Ransom said from the stage in between songs by his band The Mostest. ”This is why!”
