Two Sisters residents were killed Saturday morning in a two-vehicle crash just west of the city, according to the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office.

Driver Austin Jacob McNelis, 23, and passenger Kayla Marie Basham, 18, were declared dead at the scene, according to reports.

Investigators said McNelis was driving east at 11:52 a.m. when he swerved to avoid a deer. His Toyota Celica slid on the wet road into the on-coming lane, where it was struck by a Dodge pickup driven by Andrew Smolich, 30, of Bend.

Two of the five occupants of Smolich’s vehicle were taken to St. Charles Bend for treatment of nonlife-threatening injuries.
