Kelly Barnett, founder of Bend-based Ideal Equine Gear and her business won the third Startup Weekend Bend event on Sunday.
Barnett also competed Oct. 18 in the concept-stage of the Bend Venture Conference, where audience members encouraged her to attend Startup Weekend.
During Startup Weekend, which continued through Sunday, she changed her product idea, pitching her equine boot as an intelligent textile that takes biometric readings of a horse’s limbs, instead of just as a protective leg wrap for an injured horse.
Barnett said she has been interviewed by the National Science Foundation about the diagnostic device and its potentially broader applications, including use in human medicine. She said there’s a possibility she could receive a grant from the foundation.
