Bulletin Staff Report

The Summit Saloon & Stage, 125 NW Oregon Ave., a popular downtown Bend spot for lunch, comedy and Raiders football, has closed.

A notice posted on the front door Tuesday indicated “unsuccessful lease negotiations and economic factors combined to force this decision.” The same letter was posted to the business’s Facebook page Tuesday afternoon.

The proprietors contacted the Oregon Liquor Control Commission on Tuesday about surrendering their liquor license, OLCC spokeswoman Christie Scott wrote in an email.

Facebook comments lamented the loss of a popular downtown lunch spot. The bar was also a popular spot for Raiders fans in Bend to meet for football games, and the upstairs lounge sponsored regular comedy shows.

Co-owner Matt Gordon, in a Facebook message to The Bulletin, said he and business partner John Simak had tried for several months to extend the lease and were unable to come to an amenable agreement.

“It is a sad day for us and our employees, but we’re grateful for the decade we had in business and are excited for the next chapter,” Gordon wrote.

A Redmond man sued the company that owns the bar, Oregon Street Pub Inc., in July for $350,000 in Deschutes County Circuit Court, alleging he was assaulted there by another patron while security staff at Summit did nothing, according to The Bulletin archives. Gordon at the time said video evidence and statements from Summit staff do not corroborate the claim. Court records show no resolution of that lawsuit thus far.
