Beavers stay unbeaten — Danny Hayes hit his first home run of the season and drove in four as the fourth-ranked Oregon State baseball team opened its series with Texas State with a 16-4 win Friday night at Goss Stadium in Corvallis. Tyler Smith added three RBIs and had three hits as the Beavers won their 13th consecutive game to open the season. Hayes hit a three-run home run in the first and then added a run-scoring single in the fourth during the Beavers’ six-run inning. The two teams continue their series today at 2:05 p.m.
Ducks fall — Ryon Healy hit a solo home run, but that was all the offense No. 15 Oregon could muster in a 4-1 loss to No. 2 Vanderbilt on Friday night at PK Park in Eugene. The Commodores got to Oregon starter Jake Reed for three runs in the second inning. The Ducks managed just a pair of hits against Vanderbilt’s Kevin Ziomek, who went the distance and struck out 13 batters. The series continues today at 2 p.m.

Vegas qualifying scrubbed — Brad Keselowski will start on the pole after heavy rain forced NASCAR to cancel qualifying for Sunday’s race at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The track got steady rain all morning Friday and again in the early afternoon after a brief break, forcing NASCAR to scrap practice and qualifying in Las Vegas for the first time.
