Conference set in kidnap/rape case

Published: December 05. 2012 4:00AM PST

A settlement conference is set for the Redmond man who allegedly raped and then threatened to kill a woman in northeast Bend in July.

Jody Gene Brooks, 52, entered the woman’s home as she slept, then held her against her will with a knife, Bend police said. The woman eventually was able to escape to a neighbor’s house.

Brooks is charged with attempted murder, three counts of first-degree kidnapping, and one count each of attempted kidnapping, first-degree rape, sexual abuse, burglary, unlawful use of a weapon, menacing, coercion, fourth-degree assault and strangulation.

Brooks was due to enter a plea Tuesday in Deschutes County Circuit Court, but attorney Jon Springer told Judge Wells Ashby that parties had been unable to reach a plea deal.

As a result, a settlement conference has been scheduled for Dec. 11.

Brooks remains in the Deschutes County jail.
