• Pioneer Tales project collects oral histories from longtime locals

Former Bend Mayor Jim Crowell grew up in a house on the corner of Jacksonville Avenue and Federal Street that his father bought for $250. It had three rooms, a chicken coop and an outhouse his family used until his father expanded the building in 1947 and gave it a bathroom.
