After a bout of hard exercise, it's not uncommon to get sudden, painful muscle contractions or spasms. The muscles, especially in the thighs and calves, can suddenly bulge hard as rocks. Muscle cramps can last seconds to minutes, and sometimes jar a person out of bed at night.
