GLENDALE, Calif. — Long before there was ever a Rose Bowl football game, there was the Rose Parade.

The event began in 1890 as a promotional effort by Pasadena’s distinguished Valley Hunt Club to promote Pasadena’s charm and warm winter climate, according to the Tournament of Roses website.
