Fire officials determined that a fire that destroyed a Bend residence Saturday was caused by the improper disposal of ashes.

The fire broke out at a residence on Jan Drive near Tumalo around 10:15 p.m.

The fire started in a plastic garbage can in the garage, in which ashes had been improperly....
