TOKYO — The death toll in Japan’s biggest quake on record rose above 7,000 Saturday as the number of strong aftershocks were recorded in the hundreds, a record, and a glimmer of hope was short-lived after news of a rescue from rubble eight days after the disaster proved unfounded.
