EUGENE — Monte Mathews never let doubt or frustration stifle his will to walk again.

Against the odds, the 41-year-old Eugene man is back on his feet — and even playing a little basketball — 25 months after a 110-foot-tall Douglas fir tree fell across his body during a windstorm.
