Fewer pollution fines lately, but why?

Central Oregon went five months between DEQ fines, and two of the violators to end that stretch turned themselves in. Officials say the lull could be due to staffing shortages as well as the economic slowdown.

In February, the Department of Environmental Quality issued several fines in Central Oregon, including one to a Prineville logging company for failing to clean up oil spills and storing waste tires at the sites.

In March, a La Pine woman received a fine for open burning.
