Shortened race helps Colorado cyclist earn the U23 national title

When he heard he would get an unexpectedly early break from the oppressive High Desert heat, Alex Howes pumped his pedals into overdrive.

That gave him just enough to hold on for the USA Cycling U23 national road race title on a sweltering Wednesday afternoon in Bend.
