Key committee OKs forest bill

Gilchrist tract would become a state forest, producing timber revenue

SALEM — A bill allowing the state to purchase land near Gilchrist to establish the first new state forest in decades passed a key budget committee on Wednesday — even as another bill providing a good chunk of the purchase price appeared to be moving forward, too.
