The way A.J. Sherman remembers it, once the first shot was fired on June 6, 1944, the well-plotted plans turned to chaos.

Sherman was among the 160,000 troops of the D-Day invasion force.

About 13,000 aircraft filled the sky, a blanket over the English Channel.
