Making the case for Max’s Law

A bill in the state Legislature would mandate concussion training for coaches, but a provision to retire older helmets is dropped due to cost concerns.

In 2001, Max Conradt, the quarterback of the Waldport High School football team, collapsed on the playing field. He had been playing with a 20-year-old helmet only eight days after incurring a concussion in the Oregon Coast school’s previous game.
