Carol Jean Vigil, American Indian district judge in New Mexico

TESUQUE PUEBLO, N.M. — Carol Jean Vigil, the first American Indian woman to be elected as a state district judge in the United States, has died. She was 61. Vigil died in her sleep Friday at Tesuque Pueblo, her family said.
