Downturn catches up with Microsoft

Up to 5,000 jobs will be cut in first-ever companywide layoffs

SEATTLE — Microsoft Corp., the Puget Sound region’s steadiest employer, succumbed to the global downturn Thursday, saying it would cut up to 5,000 jobs over the next 18 months as sales of many of its products slowed.
