When A.J. Cohen opened Local Joe, an upscale denim jeans and clothing store in 1993 in downtown Bend, people thought he would never make it.

The conventional local wisdom at the time was nobody would pay $100 to buy a pair of designer jeans in a town where Wrangler and Levi Strauss reigned....
