Elk season is on the way in Oregon

Ochoco Unit bodes well for fortunate hunters

Elk hunters lucky enough to draw a tag for the Ochoco Unit east of Prineville could find excellent opportunity to bag a bull this fall.

The unit is home to about 4,300 elk, with about 30 bulls per 100 cows — the highest bull-to-cow ratio in the unit since 1991.
