SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Peter Deng isn’t big on e-mail.

The problem, he explains, is that the format is too, well, formal.

“I use e-mail really sparingly,” says the 17-year-old who will be a senior this fall at McClatchy High School in Sacramento.
