No fuel but the wind

Planes without engines. It might seem alarming, but a group of local pilots, professional and amateur, have made a sport of it. Now, they’re trying to get others in the cockpit of a glider.

On a warm afternoon, Rollie Ayers’ plane bobs and weaves a few feet above the runway at the Bend Municipal Airport, struggling to climb.

Two hundred feet behind, Ayers’ plane pulls a Schleicher ASK 21 glider. It hops more nimbly into the air, its 55-foot-wide wings rocking....
