The conditions were ripe for Hoodoo ski area to profit this season from its best visitor numbers in at least 25 years and abundant snowfall.

But rising prices for fuel needed to power grooming equipment and heat the lodge prevented the Santiam Pass ski area from turning a profit in its season,....
