Fewer funds for reading program

Cuts to SMART’s budget will affect coordinators, not students, officials say

A reading program that is a staple in many Central Oregon schools is taking a major budget hit.

SMART (Start Making A Reader Today) announced Friday it will restructure employment this fall in an effort to cut $1 million, or one-fourth, of its $4 million statewide budget.
