A possible jump from mountain lodgepoles to lower-elevation ponderosas could bring the infestation closer to Bend

Mount Bachelor and the slopes above Sparks and Cultus lakes have already been hit, with evergreen lodgepole pine trees turned red, dying from a mountain pine beetle infestation.
