MADRAS — The smell of sauteing onions drifts out of the middle school classroom and into the hallway.

Inside, pork chops sizzle. A perfectly shaped Bundt cake sits on the countertop nearby. And a platter of sliced potatoes topped with cheese is cooling on the counter.
