As floods, avalanches, fires and storms threaten the Pacific Crest Trail, volunteers and agency work crews toil with the maintenance that is necessary to keep the path in top shape for hikers and horseback riders.

Last November, a torrent of ice, water and rocks roared down Milk Creek from the slopes of Mount Jefferson.

The flow, probably released when an earthen dam collapsed on Milk Creek Glacier, carried Volkswagen Beetle-size boulders a mile downstream, rerouted streams and left several feet of mud....
