As raindrops pelt the barns at Bend's J Bar J Ranch on this early Wednesday morning, Payton Smith leads her pony, Scooter, out of the stable with a determination as fierce as a 7-year-old can possess.

"Come on Scootie," she urges, leaning up to give the white pony a kiss.
