Makayla Landry, 13, sat on a picnic blanket Saturday afternoon in the Les Schwab Amphitheater, watching runners lope - and sometimes limp - to the finish line of the Pole Pedal Paddle.

When asked if she would ever compete, though, Makayla flashed a rueful smile.
