THE DALLES -

Early one Sunday morning in 1957, the floodgates to the giant dam here closed for the first time.

Murky water slammed against the 260-foot concrete wall and tumbled backward. A pool began to swirl and grow.

Thousands of onlookers watched quietly from higher ground as a new lake rose....
