Shifting shafts of shining sunbeams walked like searchlights through leaden clouds. On the far bank, gaunt horses in shaggy coats stood illuminated as if on stage. A train rattled empty cars downstream to the junction at the Columbia. Juniper trees and willows bent with the breeze.
