La Pine groundwater supply faces threat from wastewater

Nitrates slowly seeping from septic systems to residents' wells

For now, many La Pine residents have clean, tasty drinking water.

Their wells draw water that fell as rain or snow 50-odd years ago, seeped through the top layer of soil and percolated through pumice, sand and gravel in the water table that lies close to the surface.
