House District 53 is a doughnut of a district that includes most of Deschutes County - La Pine, Redmond, Sisters - except for a hole representing much of Bend. Gene Whisnant, the Republican incumbent, is seeking re-election. Bill Smith, a Democrat, wants to replace him.
