Though he would rather be riding his bike, Michael Soma of Bend has been riding the luck roller coaster since spring.

The 48-year-old triathlete, who moved to the High Desert from Portland just last year, spent all of last winter training for Ironman Arizona, held in April 2006. He felt prepared....
