Competitive rafters take part in a 'boatercross' race Sunday on the Deschutes River

"Ready. Set. Rumble!" shouts Travis Busack.

The gun goes off with a loud pop.

And without hesitation, three rafts holding two competitors and one paddle each rush across a flat section of the Deschutes River toward their second paddle, which is stuck in the mud under the water.
