Ice carvers are crowd pleasers at Bend's annual Winterfest

A plume of ice flew from the blade of Joe Szerwo's chainsaw Saturday afternoon during the ice-carving competition at Winterfest.

Szerwo used ice like building blocks, piecing together a sculpture where the word "Bend," crowned by a half-moon, balanced atop three art deco legs.
