For three years, Jenn Hofmann spent spring encamped in a sea of ice.

She slipped into two zero-degree sleeping bags for a night's rest, even as the sun remained high in the sky. She took her turn gripping a rifle and scanning the flat, white horizon for predatory polar bears.
